Rev. Carney Leslie Hammond, 73, of Benton, died at 6:38 a.m. Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2011 in the Leffler-Poulson Funeral Home of Benton with Paul Reynolds officiating. Burial with military rites performed by the Benton American Legion Post 280, Benton V.F.W. Post 2671 and the Army National Guard will be in the Hammond-Cypher Cemetery near Whittington. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Hammond was born on July 23, 1937 in West City, the son of Leslie and Wilma (Storey) Hammond. He married the former Pamela Sue ( Ellis ) on August 30, 2002 and she survives.
Carney was an ordained minister and a retired Asphalt and Paving Contractor. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving with the 3rd Infantry during the Korean War, and he attended the West City Church of God.
Survivors include his wife: Pamela Sue Hammond of Benton, a daughter: Debbie Edwards of Sesser, two grandchildren, four brothers: Billy D. Hammond of Benton, Gail Hammond, Dale Hammond and John Hammond all of Hendersonville, TN, two sisters: Wilma Ann Smith of Paducah, KY, and Joy Griffith and husband Tim of Benton, an aunt: Josephine Joles of West City , and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Hammond was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Jimmy Hammond, Timothy Hammond, Kenneth Hammond and Alvin Hammond, and a sister: Lorene Beal.
Arrangements are through the Leffler-Poulson Funeral Home of Benton.
