Joe Dunbar Obituary


Joe Eugene Dunbar, 75, of Benton; died at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion.

Graveside services for the family and close friends will be at 9:00 a.m. Friday, September 9, 2011 at the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton with Rev. Charles Klassen officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the Benton American Legion Post #280, V.F.W. Post #2671 and the National Guard.

After the graveside services, family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, at the First Baptist Church of Benton. A Memorial Service to celebrate and honor the life of Joe Dunbar will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Benton, with Rev. Charles Klassen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Brown Bag Lunch Program at the First Baptist Church.

Arrangements are through the Leffler - Poulson Funeral Home of Benton.

Joe was born on December 23, 1935 in Benton, the son of Thompson and Pearl (Little) Dunbar. He married the former Joyce Lee Goff on July 2, 1955 and she preceded him in death on January 8, 2007.

Mr. Dunbar was a retired Illinois State Police Trooper from District 13. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. Joe was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2898 and American Legion Post #280 both of Benton.

Joe was a member of the First Baptist Church of Benton where he faithfully served as a volunteer with the Brown Bag Lunch Program for children.

Joe is survived by two sons: Rob Dunbar and wife Jennifer of Marion, and Scott Dunbar of Benton; a daughter: Cindy and husband Kyle Schmitt of Oakawville; eight Grandchildren: Alecia Dunbar of Big Rock, TN, Andrew Scott Dunbar of Benton, Jeffrey Moore of Marion, Dustin Dunbar of Dover, TN, Kara Dunbar of Marion, Daniel Schmitt of Oakawville, Jama Dunbar of Benton and Kymberly Schmitt of Oakawville; four Great-Grandchildren: Dawson, Azhure, Shanndyn and Kamden; and a brother: Thompson "Junior" Dunbar of Benton.

Mr. Dunbar was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother: Frank Dunbar, and a sister.
