Mildred Violet Kern

Mildred Violet Kern, 81, of Mt. Vernon; died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 17, 2012 at the Nature Trail Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Leffler - Poulson Funeral Home of Benton, with Rev. Eric Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday at the Leffler - Poulson Funeral Home of Benton. Graveside committal services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Harrison Cemetery near Buckner.

Mrs. Kern was born on September 11, 1930 in Chicago, IL the daughter of George Gast and Mildred (Schiller) Gast. She married Charles Robert Kern on April 1, 1950 and he preceded her in death on August 18, 1987.

Mildred was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She also formerly worked as a Certified Nurse's Aide. While living in the Chicago area she attended the Moody Bible Institute and after moving to Southern Illinois she attended Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

She is survived by four children: Charles Kern and wife Kathy of Seattle, WA, Karen and husband Larry Bezzone of Mt. Vernon, Sue Wheatley of Benton, Tammy and husband Paul Brink of Park Ridge, IL; five granddaughters: Amber Kern, Lela Kern, Naomi Kern, Jessica Hutchinson, Nicole Wheatley; nine great-grandchildren: Sara Haven Kern, Suri Haven Kern, Noriah Kern, Ilyas Jamle, Tarrel Foxx, Darios Foxx, Gage Reeder, Madison Parkhill, Caleb Baker, two sisters: Arlene Kurceba and Shirley Catalano both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister Jean Huege.
