Shirley Briley Obituary

Shirley Elaine Briley, 86, of Elkville, IL, passed away at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Mercy Hospital South of St. Louis.

Shirley was born on May 1, 1935, in DeSoto, Illinois, to Clarence Edward Craig and Wilma Lucille (Wiley) Craig. She married Virgil Otto Briley on May 1, 1954, and together they shared 59 years of marriage before his death on November 27, 2013. Ever since his passing she deeply missed her husband, whom she loved dearly.

Shirley was a retired teacher from the Elverado School District #196. She was a member of the Old Du Quoin Baptist Church.

Shirley enjoyed watching golf, especially her favorite professional golfer Vijay Singh. She also enjoyed playing pinochle, attending Rock n’ Roll music concerts. Her family said she recently attended a Bob Seger concert in St. Louis, all by herself. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family.

Surviving are her two loving children Craig Briley and wife Julie of Elkville, IL, Cindy Whitley and husband Jim of Du Quoin, IL; grandchildren: Ara Briley and wife Jessie of Chandler, AZ, Ali Ruiz and husband Alex of Carterville, IL, Travis Whitley and wife Ashley of Waterloo, IL, Taylor Hebbeler and husband Cory of St. Louis, MO; step-grandchildren: Kellie Sundeen and husband Clint , Richard Harris and wife Angie, Jim Whitley, Jr., Darren Whitley, Megan Liwanag and husband Chris, Jessica Martin and husband Andrew; great-grandchildren: Alea, Alissa, and Alejandro Ruiz, Emma and Ella Briley, Tessa and Miles Whitley, twins Otto and Von Hebbeler; step-great-grandchildren: Ethan, Mason, and Harper Martin, Clint, Kyle, and Seth Sundeen, Maxwell Harris, Madison, Ryan, and Branden Whitley; step-great-great-grandchildren: Madilyn, Axel, and Haislee Sundeen; two sisters Clotene Woosley and husband John of Du Quoin, IL, Mary Leek and husband Larry of Colorado; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Vijay Singh and wife Mia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister Betty Casleton, and a brother Marlin Craig.

Per Shirley’s wishes, private immediate family only graveside services were held in the DeSoto Cemetery, DeSoto, Illinois.

Arrangements are through the Leffler Funeral Home, of Benton.
